Sash Windows are a popular form of glass window which allow for efficient ventilation and a traditional look to your windows.
Sash Balancers are required to aid in the seamless and fluid motion of the sliding of the top and bottom window panels. Improper or poor installation or balancing results in heavy windows that are difficult to move and can snag making their movement difficult.
New developments allowing for greater ease of movement are constantly being developed. Penrose Glass can retrofit your existing sash windows that may becoming tired from overuse or have lost their counter-balance.

For windows that slide up and down, nothing matches Whitco Spiral Sash Balances for smooth, easy, reliable operation. Windows open at a finger's touch and stay fixed in any desired position.
The Whitco Spiral Sash Balance is a carefully engineered device consisting of a torsion spring and spiral rod, encased in rigis A.B.S. material, which equalises the weight of the sash and balances it precisely throughout its movements up and down. The Sash Balance is constructed with a corrosion-proof stainless steel foot. Shock absorbing stops should be fitted to prevent damage to sashes.
A comprehensive range of 33 sizes covers all window openations from 560mm to 2,180 mm high. Five weight ranges are available to suit differing sash widths and glass thickness. Black and White tube colours are available.
Identifying the weight of the sash to be balanced.
1. Multiply the sash width by sash height in metres and use the weights below.
3mm glass thickness weighs 7.5kg per square metre
4mm glass thickness weighs 10.0kg per square metre
5mm glass thickness weighs 12.5kg per square metre
6mm glass thickness weighs 15.0kg per square metre
If sash is 0.9 metres high, 0.7 metres wide
and glass thickness is 3mm
Calculation is as follows:
0.9 x 0.7 = 0.63m3
Multiply by glass thickness weight per square metre,
0.63 x 7.5kg = 4.72kg
2. Select the balance unit in a Weight and Size range to meet the sash weight requirements and window opening.
To select a Sash Balance Tube unit size.
1. Measure the top sash height.
2. Refer to appropriate closed "C" dimension on table.
3. If top sash height does not fall exactly, go down to next size.
Note - The closed dimension "C" must be less than the sash height.
4. Read off balance number.
1. Establish overall opening height.
2. Refer to extended "E" dimension on drawing.
3. If opening height size does not fall exactly, go up to next size.
4. Read off Balance Number.
Remember: When closed the bottom sash has the tube in the extended position, and the top sash tube is in the closed position.
Important: Always ensure that you select the correct type of balance to match the weight and size of sash.
Adjustable or Standard Foot.
Units are available with either a Standard foot attached or without foot. There are two separate Adjustable feet available to suit the No Foot Unit (one type for 7.25kg to 14kg and a heavy duty foot for 18kg to 22kg). These allow for quick Pre-Tension adjustment without fastening screw removal.
Most Aluminium fabricators prefer to use the adjustable foot as it provides quicker and more precise adjustment. Joiners also can, of course, adopt the use of this type of foot in preference to the Standard foot.
